Vivid Art Gallery will host an opening for the work of newly represented artist Julia Jensen and her exhibit “Poised Between,” on the second Friday of the month, July 11th (due to the 4th of July holiday). The event, which runs from 5-7 PM, is open to all and is free of charge. Refreshments will also be served.
Jensen is an east coast-based artist, spending time in both southern Vermont and Nantucket. While she has exhibited widely in these places, this show will represent her first display of work in the Chicago area. Jensen’s work has evolved over time, and she now creates abstract landscapes that brim with life and color. While she previously painted representational work, including en pleine aire, she now focuses on creating work that is based off her memories and impressions. In describing this process, she quotes 19th century landscape painter George Innes: “The definition of art is to represent objects, not for themselves but in order to embody the echo they have placed on our soul.” As a result, her work is guided by feelings as opposed to only what she sees.
This method also influences her process, as she feels paintings develop over time. As a result, she keeps the surface of the painting open without a pre-determined plan. Doing so allows her to add brush strokes and color in various ways over a period of time, allowing for the painting to emerge. The effect is that, as described by Art New England, a contemporary art and culture magazine based in Massachusetts, her “canvases border on the mystical and [the] command of space is masterful.”
In addition to the art opening at Vivid, many other businesses in Hubbard Woods will be celebrating First (actually second) Friday in July. To enliven the evening, there will be drinks and snacks. Live music will also be playing throughout the district. Details are available at www.shophubbardwoods.com.
